First edition of the Lipids & Cosmetics Congress
The Cosmetic Valley competitiveness cluster opens a branch in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region and organizes the first edition of the brand new Lipids & Cosmetics conference in Bordeaux, in partnership with the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, its Development and Innovation Agency (ADI-NA) and the Institut des Corps Gras (ITERG).
The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, which has been a partner of the Cosmetic Valley competitiveness cluster for the past three years, is home to more than 150 companies in the beauty industry, and boasts excellent expertise in the very specific field of lipids, which are eminently strategic for the cosmetics industry since 70% of the raw materials used in cosmetic emulsions are lipids (vegetable oils, fatty acids and alcohols, etc.) or lipid derivatives (emollients, emulsifiers), which provide stability, richness and efficacy. This expertise is backed by the Canejan-based Institut des Corps Gras (ITERG), which has become the European benchmark for the knowledge, analysis and technology of fatty substances.
A major issue for the industry, innovation in the field of lipids will be at the heart of this new congress, dedicated to the latest research and innovations in the fields of skin physiology, oleochemical processes, extraction, purification and analytical techniques, as well as new formulation technologies based on lipid raw materials.
Some thirty high-level speakers are expected to take part in this scientific event.

Cosmatagora 2018, Gattefossé takes on a new challenge
The 10th edition of Cosmetagora is an opportunity for Gattefossé to launch its brand new Inspiration concept.
Providing pleasure, surprise and motivation, this tool has a real objective of awakening creativity and innovation, and aims to bring a breath of fresh air to the various players in the cosmetics industry. For years, the company has been creating ever more innovative textures in its laboratories, in order to inject ideas for formulas into its customers' developments.
For 2018, Gattefossé offers three themes, between trend and inspiration, which make up a collection of 8 formulas.
As every year, Gattefossé also takes part in the competition for the Formulation Prize: 10 years, 10 ingredients. Gattefossé presents a texture, simple but no less simplistic, in which all its know-how as a formulator has been put at the service of sensoriality.
About this new "Inspiration" tool
Inspiration is built around a series of themes that will give new ideas to formulators, enabling them to reinvent cosmetics by showing, for example, new ways of using Gattefossé ingredients.
These themes have varying degrees of originality to meet different creative needs and expectations.
The original, innovative formulas in these themes enable brands to discover new textures and generate new ideas for future launches.
These textures are perfect for revealing Gattefossé lipochemical ingredients outside their comfort zones and used in other applications.
The themes and formulas of this 2018 edition
This year, Inspiration will feature three themes: Move it, Be fresh and Think twice:
Move it aims to accompany the routine of sporty consumers who want to get and stay fit and healthy; Be fresh is inspired by the cold and reinvents freshness through innovative textures; and Think twice speaks of illusions and trompe-l'œil thanks to unexpected galenics.
8 innovative formulations will be presented: "Coco Sweat", an anti-perspiration powder that must be diluted in water, "Ice, Ice, Baby", a day cream as fresh as an ice cube, or "Liquid Balm", whose name is evocative enough to understand that its sensoriality will surprise.
"Quali Glass Coat" the new decoration process from Stoelzle
This new technique offers a range of new decorative effects with very low environmental impact (versus conventional lacquering) and greater mechanical resistance.
With this new decoration process, Stoelzle Masnieres Parfumerie combines innovation and environmental commitment.
Glass production represents, on average, 70% of the environmental impact. Electricity consumption accounts for 37% of the impact of glass production, which justifies the priority given to this resource.
Since 2017 the site's electricity consumption now comes solely from French 100% renewable resources.
The extraction and transportation of the components used in glass production account, on average, for 30% of environmental impact. This rate is reduced by the proximity of the raw material: sand is extracted 200 km from the plant and transported by boat.
In 2017, Stoelzle Masnières Parfumerie's environmental footprint was reduced by 17 %.
Naturex at Cosmetagora 2018
Eliorelys combats the damage caused by blue light
Eliorelys, a cherry blossom-based active ingredient used in skincare and from Naturex's Eutectys™ range, offers effective protection against the damage caused by blue light emitted by cell phones, tablets and computers, according to the results of a new study conducted by the group.
In a comet assay, researchers found that human keratinocytes incubated with Eliorelys displayed a significant reduction in DNA damage (up to 75 %) compared with cells that had undergone no treatment. The results indicate that Eliorelys™ exerts a protective effect against DNA damage caused by blue light. The full results of this study will be unveiled at the Cosmetagora trade show in Paris (Espace Champerret, January 9-10, 2018).
It has long been recognized that exposure to UV rays contributes to skin damage, premature aging and carcinogenesis. Until recently, however, no one had considered artificial blue light to be potentially harmful. But recent studies, confirmed by Naturex's own study, have concluded that blue light can actually cause damage to cultured human keratinocytes and skin, leading to levels of skin aging similar to those caused by UVA rays. On average, we spend five hours a day in front of a screen, and 90 % of 20-65 year-olds use electronic devices every day. This means that blue light could cause widespread skin damage.
Eliorelys is extracted from cherry blossoms using an exclusive patented process based on Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent (NaDES) technology. For targeted application to the skin, this extract features a superior phytochemical profile offering protection against cellular damage caused by UV and blue light.
Fortify strengthens the Beautyfood range
At Cosmetagora, Naturex will also present Fortify - the fourth and final instalment in its Beautyfood collection of skincare products, formulated with ingredients derived from plants in the food chain. The new range includes five nutrient-rich ingredients inspired by beverages and foods: ginseng, oats, bamboo, nettle and ginger. All these ingredients are renowned for their regenerating and stimulating powers.
The ingredients in the Fortify range are sourced in accordance with Naturex's leading-edge requirements in terms of traceability and transparency. Fortify ginseng, for example, is grown on small to medium-sized farms in north-eastern China, using farming practices that make a point of preserving nature and the environment.
Working with Naturex, local ginseng growers have set up an environmental program that encourages biodiversity. Growers use manual weeding to minimize pesticide use, and plant trees to offset carbon dioxide emissions.
The "wow" effect of the Naturex offer
Stéphanie Puel, Director of the Personal Care Division at Naturex, explains: "Our approach at Cosmetagora will be to unveil nature's beauty secrets and showcase some of the most exciting natural active ingredients on the market today. Consumers love to be inspired by innovative beauty products offering real benefits. With this in mind, Eliorelys and the new Fortify range offer high performance and bring the "wow" effect that will surprise the end consumer."
Peel Off mask from Strand Cosmetics Europe
Fresh to the touch, the gel texture of the Peel Off mask provides an immediate effect. pore refiner as it dries. It then forms a film that is easy to remove after about ten minutes, leaving skin healthy and radiant.
How does it work? As it dries, the formula captures imperfections, dead skin and impurities from the skin, which the film mechanically carries away with it when it is removed. During application, the film plays an occlusive role, facilitating absorption of the complex of plants rich in flavonoids, arbutosides and depigmenting tannins, with their radiance-enhancing properties.

Virojanglor and Interesting Sourcing join forces
Virojanglor, a leader in metal packaging for the premium cosmetics and wine & spirits markets, has just acquired Interesting Sourcing, a French company specializing in the manufacture and global management of multi-material packaging.
Virojanglor and Interesting Sourcing have a similar business model, based on their long-standing and exclusive partnerships with leading-edge factories, and together they will continue to consolidate their position as key suppliers to the world of luxury packaging.
Historical commitment
Virojanglor is a family-owned French company founded in 1963. It has gradually built up a network of partners in Italy and China, whose know-how and industrial relevance have fuelled the premiumization of its offering over the last 10 years. With this in mind, the company has decided to extend the scope of its activities to include multi-material collaboration, in compliance with the required industrial standards.
Interesting Sourcing has been managing multi-material, packaging and P.O.S. projects for almost 30 years, thanks to a solid network of partners in China.
New positioning, new markets
The aim of this alliance is to gain a better penetration coefficient among the major luxury groups, and thus increase business volumes. In addition, this synergy will enable Interesting Sourcing's technical and industrial potential to be placed at the service of customers in France and abroad. Virojanglor's strong brand image will enable it to make a significant move into new markets. Its consolidated sales will approach €25 million by 2018.
As part of this merger, Grégoire Levet, Chairman and founder of Interesting-Sourcing, will retain his operational management functions within the "multi-material products" division. He becomes a minority shareholder in the Virojanglor group.
"This merger is the sign of a new adventure, with the aim of growing our business in an increasingly premium market. It is now based on the cross-fertilization of plants at the cutting edge of the packaging industry for multiple materials such as metal, wood, cardboard and injected plastic. This new positioning meets the expectations of our premium markets in France and abroad", explain Jean-David Curiel, Chairman of the Virojanglor Group, and Grégoire Levet .
Eco-socio-design of Expanscience active ingredients
Finalist in the Sustainable Beauty Awards "Expanscience was selected in the "Sustainable leadership" category from over 100 entries, and looks back on the development of its assets.
For over 40 years, Laboratoires Expanscience has been highlighting the noblest part of the plant world by developing cosmetic active ingredients from a pharmaceutical culture and cutting-edge R&D.
As part of its CSR program, the "Better Living Program", Laboratoires Expanscience is committed to guaranteeing the eco-socio-design of all its active cosmetics by 2020. To achieve this, they are committed to providing information on their safety, harmlessness and environmental impact, in a transparent approach to their customers worldwide.
Measure and continuously improve the eco-socio-design of cosmetic active ingredients
As early as 2012, Laboratoires Expanscience developed a "sustainability" grid based on AFAQ 26000 recommendations to measure the socio-environmental impacts of the development of their cosmetic active ingredients.
Called "Ecodesign naturally", this grid evaluates and rates assets according to 7 criteria concrete :
- the chain's traceability and maturity in terms of Corporate Social Responsibility,
- the nature of the raw material,
- the production process (nature of stages, nature of additives, solvent, etc.),
- transportation,
- storage conditions,
- patentability,
- the packaging used.
Expanscience's entire catalog of cosmetic active ingredients, i.e. 27 active ingredients and sensory ingredients, was evaluated. All 8 Expanscience active ingredients launched since 2014 score over 80/100 (including Ormesia, Neurovity, Pixalia and Passioline), and 78% of the active ingredients in the catalog score over 75/100.
In a continuous improvement approachThis tool enables us to define the socio-environmental criteria that can be improved, while preserving the quality and cosmetic performance of our active ingredients. For example, in 2018, the sourcing of its Soline active ingredient will become French; actions will also be put in place to obtain new organic active ingredients.
Actifs Cosmétiques, one of Expanscience's original activities
With over forty years' experience in the field of plant raw materials, and expertise in lipochemistry, molecular adistillation and plant extraction, Laboratoires Expanscience develops innovative cosmetic active ingredients with scientifically proven efficacy. These active ingredients benefit from biological and clinical tests, as well as patents and publications. They have all been developed by the company's Research and Development department.
" Upstream, Laboratoires Expanscience takes particular care to ensure that selection of plant raw materials and ethical sourcing practices "explains Armelle Le Peniec, Director of Actifs Cosmétiques Expanscience.
Expanscience has been a member of the UEBT (Union for Ethical BioTrade) since 2011, and has been deploying its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) policy for over ten years. This was recognized as exemplary by AFAQ 26000 in 2013. Keen to supply quality active ingredients that also respect the principles dictated by the Nagoya Protocol (a text that came into force on October 12, 2014), Expanscience anticipated these rules as early as 2010 by defining its own responsible plant supply chain policy.
